Pepsi drops sweetener

Pepsi has dumped the controversial sweetener aspartame from Diet Pepsi.  Instead, Pepsi will be replacing it with sucralose, another artificial sweetener.

This is apparently in response to a consumer backlash.

“Aspartame is the No. 1 reason consumers are dropping diet soda,” said Seth Kaufman, vice-president of Pepsi.

Aspartame, best known by the brand names Equal and NutraSweet, has been subject to rumours, mostly generated on the Internet, linking it to cancer. That’s despite the US Food and Drug Administration finding there is no evidence suggesting aspartame is unsafe.

So why is Pepsi doing it? Because getting rid of it might just give Pepsi a competitive advantage over its main rival Coca Cola which still uses aspartame in Diet Coke.
