Greg Hunt has “open mind” for nuclear industry in South Australia

Environment minister Greg Hunt says he has an open mind on nuclear power and South Australia creating a nuclear waste industry.

Mr Hunt told the ABC Insiders program on Sunday that the government would wait to see the outcome of the South Australian royal commission into nuclear which is looking at whether Australia should be more involved in the industry.

“We approach this with an open mind,’’ Mr Hunt said. “We’ll look at the results of the Royal Commission.

“Nuclear energy is one of the many forms of zero emissions energy which will be available.”

He flagged Australia offering it to the rest of the world if it was found it could be done safely.

“Look, I think it is a practical question, not an ideological question,’’ he said.

“There is a Royal Commission and I frankly welcome that Royal Commission because it’s been brought forward by a state Labor government, you have a Coalition government – that’s a good combination to look at these questions with an open mind and the world is looking for solutions in this space, that’s absolutely true.”
